Dr. Frost Makes a Gift to "Pay Forward"

"I believe oral and maxillofacial surgery has given me an opportunity for a good life with a wonderful future. Giving to OMSF through a planned gift is a way to pay forward for the help others have given me," says Dr. David E. Frost. Dr. Frost and his wife, Claudia, are Charter Members of the Robert V. Walker Society.

In thinking about making a planned gift to OMSF, Dr. Frost considered many factors. One aspect that swayed his decision was the Society's namesake, Dr. Robert V. Walker. "I have extreme respect for Dr. Walker," Dr. Frost noted. Other considerations in his decision were an estate tax break for a future gift and the ability to insure a long term benefit to the OMSF.

When thinking about your own potential gift to OMSF, Dr. Frost suggests asking yourself some questions: has the practice of OMS been good to you and your family? To your community? To the patients you treat? Dr. Frost says, "If the answers these questions are yes, please give to the OMSF to help assure the future of OMS and the spectrum of care we provide!"

Gifts to the Robert V. Walker Society benefit research and education in the oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty. Dr. Frost feels strongly that research is the basis for what we do now and will do in the future. "Research in an area means your specialty is the leader and owner of that area," he says. Oral and maxillofacial surgery presents a unique opportunity for research because the specialty bridges the medical and dental worlds and has a broad spectrum of patients.

Dr. Frost has a distinguished oral and maxillofacial surgery career. He has been in private practice for 23 years in Chapel Hill and Durham, NC. He holds a clinical academic appointment in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Dentistry. In the fall of 2008, Dr. Frost received one of the AAOMS Presidential Achievement Awards, which recognizes outstanding oral and maxillofacial surgeons whose longstanding contributions have benefited the specialty through clinical, academic, research or public service.

Volunteering is a way of life for Dr. Frost. He is currently Chair of the OMSF Board of Directors. He is Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Health Volunteers Overseas, and he presently serves on the AAOMS Faculty Educator Development Award (FEDA) Selection Committee. To volunteer is an opportunity for individuals to strengthen the specialty, and Dr. Frost encourages everyone to become involved in some way.

Besides volunteering, supporting OMSF is a way for Dr. Frost to make a personal commitment to the specialty. "I think it is the best way to assure the future of OMS and ensure leading care for our patients," he says.
